Supermarket gift cards for students at uni

Hi,
I couldn't decide where to put this thread, but thought people here know quite a bit about the supermarkets.
My sister has just started uni and I want to give her a bit of money every month to help with food and take the strain off my parents. I was thinking of buying a gift voucher for her and 'topping it up' every month.
I asked in Tescos and they don't seem to do it.
Does anyone know if this can be done? I want to give her £10 a month, now I could buy a voucher every month, and post it, however then its an extra 60p or whatever. I could give her the £10, but I can see it just getting lost in her bank account and won't be very helpful.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Asda do it... The set comes with two cards and you keep one, she keeps the other.

When you top up £10 on your card... she automatically has it available on hers.

Thats the only place Ive seen it though...

    Hi beadgirl,

I've moved your thread over to the Food shopping and groceries board where hopefully you'll get lots of advice.

I know it may be obvious but keep the receipts when you top it up, just to cover yourself and that of you sister if theres a glitch at soem point.

Sainsburys do and it is much appreciated :D:D

Also parents can top up either card so for example if mum hasn't got her card she can top up the student card in the same way. It doesn't matter :)
  • I had a friend who used the Sainsbury's one and she seemed to like it. Her parents kept a card and would top it up when they did their own shop and then their daughter could spend the money on her own card as and when. :)
  • Ah thank you very much! I am off to visit her this weekend, so will find out if Sainsburys or Asda are close to her.
All of your posts explain how I would want it to work, so I will look into it a bit more, I am glad that there is a top up system in some shops, I think it is a good idea.
Thank you for moving it :)

I think these would work better if they restricted the product that could be bought - ie no alcohol!

I know the Sainsburys gift cards, you can find out the balance over the phone by dialing the careline number on their automated gift card service.

Great if you are worried if she is spending it on the wrong stuff! Or for the rest of you how much is on a gc that you found hidden in your purse.
