British Gas planning to move from standard tariff

I have read that people have called british gas stating they are thinking of leaving for big savings on their bills through other companies they get quotes from online. People have had british gas credit their accounts and was wondering how common this is.

Has anyone done this and if so how much did british gas give them to stay and not switch?
