Made redundant - what benefits will I get?

Hi everyone
I have just been made redundant after 35 years of non stop working. Will I be able to claim ESA if I have savings?
Also, when you have to sign on, is it every 2 weeks on the day that you first signed on eg every wednesday.
Sorry to sound daft but I have never done this before and the gov website is confusing
many thanks

It's JSA (unless you are ill).

Do you have savings or capital (not including the home you live in) over £6000 - this includes your redundancy.

Do you have children living at home?

Do you have a partner and do they work?

    Hi
I have no children and I live alone, mortgage free.
I do have savings of more than £6000 yes.
I am sure I read a while ago that I wouls be entitled to benefits for 6 months even with savings
    Thanks for the reply

You are, it will be Contribution JSA.
Ain't happy, I'm feeling glad, I got sunshine in a bag, I'm useless, but not for long, my future is coming on, it's coming on, it's coming on........

You will get contribution based JSA at £71 pw (this is taxable so if you have earnt over your allowance it is taxable).

If you have savings under £16000 you may get income based JSA but even if that was awarded the only thing it would give you is Council Tax benefit.

It's not a lot considering how hard you have worked is it

No it is not much after all the years I have worked.
Would I have to sign on every fortnight for the 6 months?

Yes, unless for some reason they decide they want you to sign more often.

Good luck with your job hunting, hope you find something before your savings dwindle too much :)

You need to sign on now (can do online) and they will contact you with a first appointment.

I am thinking of taking a holiday before I start to claim the benefit.
If I knew what day I would be expected to sign on I was thinking of taking a break between sign on days. I don't really want to lose any weeks given that this is all I will get and only for 6 months.
