New DVD Drive

I have an old HP Compaq NC6220 Laptop and the DVD drive unit has failed.
I've had a look on ebay for a replacement drive unit and the few I can find on there which are listed specifically for this laptop are all used.
Looking on ebuyer there laptop dvd drives are a bit cheaper than the used ones are on ebay, but they're not listed as specifically for this laptop.
So my question is, will any laptop dvd drive fit into this laptop?
If not, what do I need to look for to make sure one will fit and work?

It may not be relevant, but installing or uninstalling itunes can cause drives to appear to stop working in windows.!!

I had to replace my son's DVD drive in his Fujitsu Siemens (Esprimo V5505) last week and managed to find a local supplier (via eBay) that had a replacement (used) drive for £ 6.98!! When I went to pick it up one of their techie guys basically said most Internal DVD drives are identical.. Made by HL Data Storage. Doesn't suprise me as I know years ago lots of VHS players shared the same chassis underneath the external casing.. Not sure if this helps you but if you do want their contact details to check with them direct, let me know.

AFAIK (and I'm sure someone else will correct me if I'm wrong) virtually any internal laptop DVD drive will physically fit - although you may have to remove the bezel and replace it with the one from your failed drive. How do I add a signature?0
