With the sunny weather, I like to work outside on the balcony, but as we're next to a forest, there are no end of wasps buzzing past, sometimes coming much too close for my liking. I seem to be screaming and running indoors every half hour. So ...
Is there anything I can use to deter them from entering the balcony in the first place? I've heard stories about spiders kept at bay with conkers, and wonder if there is something wasps don't like.
It's not funny, I seem to have a phobia of them, and getting stung. And I'd quite like to be outdoors enjoying the sun without seeing big creepy things every few minutes.

Wasps detest smoke ! problem is you cant put a bonfire on your balcony, maybe you could burn a couple of smoky candles when their at their worst.
I could write a book on them:eek: once bought a house and it was full of them !0 -
I used to use citronella candles in the past... you could try that!0

Could try this:

Don't know if it is any good but it is much cheaper than this:

which I also found.

One option is to learn to ignore or tolerate them. Wasps are irritating but stings are actually quite rare. I have been stung once in about 30 years and that was when I got into bed and lay on a wasp.0

I too will try anything to deter wasps. Last summer if i left the kitchen window open a crack and we would soon have over 5! I got stung while putting washing on line - in arm pit. Once on the neck while sitting outside and the kids if they were in the kitchen. I went through lots of wasp killer. Im trying a jam jar and water outside window sill next!0

Hey, thanks all, I'm going to try the candle option now, as I'm getting really annoyed at being chased indoors by the pesky little beggars. If that fails, then it's on to more expensive options. Most other insects I can just about cope with, as they are not likely to cause significant pain. I'm not sure I believe wasps rarely sting, you're probably right, but the primitive part of my brain takes over when I see one and I end up running indoors faffing about like a madwoman.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.
