Removing interior door - spring loaded

Need to remove an interior door but I see that the hinge has got some sort of spring loaded chain between the middle hinge and the door. Perkomatic I think its called.

I've heard I may need a special tool to remove this?

Or can I just unscrew the hinges?

And yes I know I need to replace afterwards.

You can just remove the hinges and then the spring catch from the frame.

They are horrible to get back on without the tool though!

What is the tool? Might just leave the spring bit off to be honest.

I take it this is the sort of spring hinge you have http://uktv.co.uk/home/item/aid/641229

If so then be carful when removing as the spring can quite easily catch your fingers when removing.
As already stated they are a bit of a nightmare to put back on but are usually fitted where building control specify a self closing door (we had then on fire doors in a flat)

Open up door as far as you can and clamp chain as close to door side as close as possible with molegrips - then pull door closed a little to ensure grips have bitten and the chain goes slack. Then and only then take out the screws from the plates. Do not remove molegrips until fitted back in place and screwed back in after the decorating is done or whatever.

The special tool is a piece of metal with a slot cut in it which fits over a narrow chain link when the door is wide open. As above, molegrips work. If they slip try hooking the thin plate with a claw hammer.
Don't do this with children or your parents nearby. It's likely you will swear.
