Hello everyone,
I need some advice please.
I'm going to Australia for a year on a workig holiday visa.
I'm not planning on backpacking as I will be based at my friends in Sydney and I will be getting a job a couple of weeks after I get there.
I'm not sure what to do about travel insurance as I keep being given conflicting information.
My friend over there says that British Citizens get free emergency medical cover but then I've also been told that I should get insurance to cover any medical expenses..
Please help!!

There is a reciprocal agreement with Oz for UK citizens that emergency treatment will not be charged. However, once the emergency is dealt with you are on your own to pay for any follow up treatment that may be necessary and of cause you'd be "stuck" in australia until such time as you were fit to catch a regular flight back to the UK which you would have to pay for yourself if it isnt your planned return date.
If the worst happened and you died then your relatives would have to pay and organise the repatriation of your remains.
If you have travel insurance then it would cover both the follow up treatment whilst you're there plus if a very bad accident did happen then they would pay for a medical evacuation back to the UK once you were stable enough to endure the flight rather than possibly you being in Oz for months in hospital with friends and family trying to visit or raise the many thousands required for a medi evac0 -
Hi there.
Thanks so much for clearing this up for me.
I shall definitely get some proper insurance before I start my journey
