Cheap (price not quality!!) bulk hamster bedding?

Hi, just wondering if anyone knows where I can buy cheap hamster bedding (the cotton wool kind), probably in bulk? At the moment we have to buy a bag (~90g) every week, and although this is only 1.20 a week I'm sure I can get it cheaper and have to buy it less often somewhere else!!

Thanks, Scuff

The cotton wool type is not meant to be very safe - itwas always recommended to avoid it when I had hamster as it could get stuck in their pouches or wrapped around their limbs. I used the stands of tissue paper stuff instead - available in huge bags, though I did trim the strands a bit shorter so they couldn't wrap around anything

Yes the fluffy cotton wool type bedding is very bad. It can be ingested and blocks up the digestive tract and will end up with a costly vet bill.

Best bedding is regular plain toilet tissue.

I agree with krlyr that sort of bedding is the one every book, breeder and rescue will tell you to avoid because of the problems t can cause, that stuff can also rip nails out and if eaten will compact the gut and cause a blockage. The shredded paper stuff is the best softer bedding for them.

Thanks guys, tbh I originally thought that and started him off using the shredded paper, however we recently went on holiday and the people who were looking after him bought some of the wooly stuff too, which he seemed to prefer by loads. I thought seeing as they sell it in Pets at Home etc, and said 'safe for use' that it would be safe for him. Feel bad now :( Will go back to the old stuff tonight, pick some up on my way home from work!
Thanks again for your help guys!

  • I used to give my hamsters shredded paper and toilet tissue. They'd build the body of the nest with the shredded paper then line it with the soft toilet tissue. It'd keep them occupied for hours.
