Replace or start again? corrupt HDD

My Packard Bell is 3.5 years old. It runs on Vista HP2. Since last night, the HDD became corrupt. I have tried to run chkdsk but it got stuck on stage 2 at 41% twice after leaving it for several hours.

I could get new HDD to be replaced, but it could be one of those situations where within a couple of weeks, something else goes wrong.

Or shall I start again? As my only computer game I play is Football Manager which min spec is 2.00GHz, Pentium 4, 1.00Gb RAM I may consider getting a reconditioned laptop. I use the computer to e-mail, surf, play music play internet games (like Yahoo games) and don't need a powerful machine.

A hard disk is far cheaper than a new machine

A full format and a reinstall might bring it back to life - if you can find out the brand of hard disk, there will probably be a hard disk diagnostic available to check the disk out properly.
