Grade A listed building

We're looking at buying a flat in a house which is A listed. Does anyone have any experience of this? We know there are huge restrictions on what you can change.......virtually nothing!
But are there any other reasons that would make you steer clear?

Grade A is a local council thing. Not a Statutory Listing. Not like a Grade I Listed Building of massive historic importance and such like. They're just hoping people will notice it's rather special and not muck it up. The local planning dept will tell you if there are any restrictions. There probably aren't any as the council can't remove PD rights retrospectively.

  • Thanks, Fluffy. We're in Scotland and I understood it was the highest level of listed building?

Fluffymuffy didn't appreciate you were in Scotland where the listing categories. Your A listing is the same as our Class 1 listing.

    It is.

One other thing to consider is that you also have an obligation to maintain the building. If you don't, the local authority may do it for you and then send you the bill. If specialist craftsmen are needed, it could be expensive.

    Loads of useful info here...
