Hi all,
We are currently supplied by calor gas on a metered estate.
It is very expensive and now only use gas boiler for heating hot water after insulating house, installing multifuel fire and electric heaters.
Dont want oil and cant get mains gas, cant fit back boiler to fire.
Can anyone suggest a electric system to heat hot water for kitchen and currently 1 x bathroom but want to add 3 x en suites?
What about 4 x under sink water heaters and electric showers?
In future hope to install solar Pv and water heating.
Any suggestions.
Thanks

In most situations gas will be cheaper than electricity. People only tend to use electricity powered water heating when convenience is more important than cost or when no non-electrical alternative is available. Have you actually done the maths to figure out what would be cheapest for you?
I'd be very surprised if the capital expenditure required to buy that many under/over sink heaters and new electric showers would be recouped by switching from gas to electricity. Even if all this equipment appeared as if by magic i'd still expect it to be more expensive to heat water by electricity and not gas. Are you on a particularly poor tariff?0 -
You might consider an "air to water heat pump" with electric boostI am the Cat who walks alone0

Hi Thanks for quick reply.
It is calor gas the price has been raised again and we cannot switch to another supplier. Boiler on its way out.
With electric water heaters at approx £100 and similar cost for showers it would appear the initial outlay would be cheaper than ground source heating etc.
Am i missing something?
thanks0 -
I don't know what air-to-water heat pumps cost.
But consider my air-to-air heat pump, for example. It heats produces 4kw of heat but only takes 1kw to run. That's 12p per hour instead of 48p per hour. It cost £350 (fitted). I could have bought a simple fan heater for £20.
To make a saving I need to save £330 in heating costs (that's £350 - £20). My air source heat pump saves me 36p per hour. That's about £1 every three hours. Or £2 per evening. Which takes 165 days at 6 hours a day to pay the £330.
It's a no brainer.
Similar calculations could be done for your water heaters.I am the Cat who walks alone0 -

Got mine on eBay (it was new) - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Heating-Cooling-Air-/41986/i.html?_sop=15&_sac=1&_from=R40&_nkw=air+con+unit - you need a split air con unit (not a portable one) that can run in "heating" mode (not all do). Ours came preloaded with refrigerant for DIY installation but we still got a builder to install it because we're DIY-useless.I am the Cat who walks alone0 -
