Garden Lighting (Solar powered)

Hi,

I want to add some lighting around my lawn.

I want to use Solar Powered lights that you just push into the ground, but there are hundreds out there and I am sure most are cheap tat.

Does anyone recommend any that work well and are 'good value' :D

Thanks.

Solar lights are not very bright, so if your thinking of lighting up some flower beds don't bother with Solar.
  • got some cheapie ones from argos last yr (pressie from bruv) 2 for £12ish, they are rubbish.

they don't light up at all in the winter cos they don't get enough sun, and in the summer if its been a real sunny day they will light up for a few hours at a push when its dark, but it is a fairly faint glow, ok if you just want to add a little "mood lighting" but not much use if you actually want to illuminate anything.

and after being out in the garden for the past year they look manky & "cheap tat" like. I should really chuck them in the bin but I don't like doing that when they were a present :o

We got some at the weekend from Homebase at £9.99 each (but on 3 for 2, and on 10% day, so £18 for 3)
They are supposedly 3 x brighter ( they don't say what they're 3 x brighter than) but still not particularly bright. Don't seem to be anywhere near as bright as the electric ones, plus its quite a cold white light, not the warm yellow light you get from electric. I wouldn't bother with them again!

They're ok, as said they won't light up an area but are good cheap marker lights. I paid about £20 for 8 plastic ones. Most are a bit damaged now after being used as "landing lights" when staggering home drunk in the dark winter nights

I would also have a look on Ebay. I got one for outside our shed to illuminate the path, and it's great, cost approx £20 from Ebay and it has a movement sensor which clicks it on when you are walking up to it. Power is equivalent to about 40w I believe. B+Q also have a good range now (good thing is you could always probably take it back if you're not happy I guess). The key thing is to not buy the cheap end of the market e.g. £10 for 4 etc. I'm intending to get a couple of more solar type lights for in the garden, but will probably look on ebay again.
  • got to agree with some previous posters if you are looking for any sort of bright lights dont bother with solar.I have tried many of these solar lights in fact i have 12 of them sitting in my garden right now .they dont give out enough light to light up very much i am afraid you can see them on and perhaps they look nice for a few hours but thats about it

Golly99 can you tell me what one you purchased off ebay (with the motion sensor). I can see a few different designs and wondered which one was best. Thanks

Laurence - not got the full details to hand and can't go on ebay at mo, but it was called Solar Courtesy Light on ebay and the seller was called tecknixbiz. It's also being sold on Amazon, this is the one:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/SaM-Innovations-Solar-Welcome-Light/dp/B000NZJLO8/ref=sr_1_1/026-0834888-9859646?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1176450578&sr=8-1

Description from Amazon "Welcome your guests and alarm potential intruders with this Solar Welcome Light. This all-in-one no wiring required solar light turns on automatically when motion is detected, and off after one minute. Using a super bright LED, this light has close to the same output as a 40W bulb, and will run for eight hours constant or two weeks on motion sensor from one full charge. The PIR sensor detects movement in an eight metre area and at an angle of 100 degrees. Includes mounting kit, keys for easy dismount of the unit and instructions."
