my partner loves her kindle and i thinking of buying her a new one for her birthday she likes the idea of the paper white as it has a built in light, well thats what she tells me,for £20 more i could get the kindle fire for her. what are peoples thoughts on the 2.admittedly she will use it more for reading, but i thought the kindle fire would give her more options

Buy her a reading light for the existing Kindle then spend the rest on something else that she'd like

Or buy the Kindle Leather Cover with Light which is powered by the Kindle itself

Yes, agreed, the pearl e-ink is by far the best of the kindle bunch, the LCD and Paperwhite dont give such good reading in sunlight etc.
  • IMO the kindle fire like most tablets will not be suitable for reading as the screen is not the pearl ink and thus will hurt the eyes for prolonged reading.

If she really wants a new kindle to just read ((why? if she has one!)) then upgrade to a non Fire one

This is really subjective depending on the person, the few serveys ive seen usually have a 50/50 e-ink / lcd preference split.

Personally I don't really find it harder to read for extended periods of time on my nexus 7 or my phone, then on my kindle.

Im not a big fan of the lighted leather cover either, I found I actually use my kindle less because it triples the thickess of the thing, frankly I prefer to turn a lamp on then use the thing. its better when traveling as it protects it and lamps are in shorter supply.

I would like too see a paperwhite in the dark and I'm tempted myself, although my sneaking suspicion the white on black scheme tablets can do is better for reading in the dark.

I've got a Kindle Fire and I find it easy to read. I particularly like the fact that I can read in bed with the light out without needing a separate light,

I've had a Kindle Keyboard plus lighted cover for a couple of years now. I read for a couple of hours every day so things like eye comfort and battery life are important to me. I love my Kindle so much for the very reason that it is not an LCD screen and is therefore as easy on the eyes as a paper book.

I also have a tablet which I can read on via the Kindle app but I never use it for that as I find I start getting eye strain after a couple of hours of reading. Also because of the large, backlit, colour screen the battery life on the tablet is nowhere near as good as the Kindle: I have to charge the tablet every couple of days, whereas the Kindle lasts for at least 3 weeks even with the light on.

I'm actually considering upgrading to the Paperwhite (its the first new Kindle that has tempted me to do so) and for me the winning features are that it still has an e-ink screen, the extended battery life and the fact that the built-in lighting will give a much more even light distribution than the current lighted cover.

Its a very personal choice, but if she really loves her current Kindle and has already stated a preference for the Paperwhite then she may not actually appreciate a Fire - I know that I wouldn't (I consider the Fire to be a tablet with an e-reader app, rather than a proper e-reader). It may be a good idea to subtly check it out with her first to get her views?

Edited to add: another thing to consider is where she will be reading? I read a lot on holiday around the pool/on the beach and you simply cannot see anything on a tablet screen in bright sunlight. Whereas the Kindle e-ink screen works perfectly.

Bear in mind that the Kindle Fire HD doesn't offer the latest Android version; rather, their own Amazon skinned one.

FWIW I ditched e-ink a long time back, I much prefer tablet/phone screens.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
