Agree with the above re facebook, though from what you are selling industry specific business would make more sense than local groups. Also you could try twitter in a similar manner.

Really the company you had build the site should have advised you with this as I know from when we had our site built there are a wide variety of options and having them explained to us was really helpfull in deciding what we wanted to do - Adwords was very overpriced for our business sector compared to other methods of promoting things.

    Best of luck.

scaredofdebt how would i do this? This is exactly what i want to do but dont know where to start?
shmeeko69 i have researched adwords and llow competition words but now need guidance what to do with it and from reading many of your posts you seem quite the expert.
I know that the type of business I am beginning will rely largely on local trade, any ideas how to advertise locally?

If you've used the free Google keyword tool wisely and found relevant keyword phrases with low competition then, make sure you have your site optimised for those words, so that the main search engines can give them the importance you require for them.

    Website Coding:

    <title>Your Keyword Phrases</title>

Main Description >> Your keywords should be in your website description.

Homepage Content >> Your keywords should also be there, but don't use them to much about 2 - 5% density.

Once you have this in place, it's time to start competing for those keywords by way of backlinking, bookmarking, writing blogs and articles....................

  • Dude, you need to provide some further information here... what is the website about? This will dictate how you earn traffic.
When I was young I respected cool people, then I grew up I respected clever people, now I'm wiser I respect kind people.
  • ...Or how about giving away a free product/service trial as a prize on Facebook in return for word of mouth advertising? That could certainly get you up and running.

It's worth checking out Google's Search Engine Optimisation Starter Guide to make sure you have the basics in place.
Sorry I can't post a link but if you do a search on Google as I have typed it, it will come up as the first result.
  • People visit my website because they are interested in the content and not just to go shopping. I sometimes put affiliate links to products in the articles but mostly people buy through the online shop. It's all affiliate links. I don't provide any of the goods myself. If you can make an interesting Facebook Page that keeps people interested and coming back for more you'll drive more traffic to your site.
I find that updating the site on a daily basis gets a lot more traffic as well.

  • For research, look at the options of what words to target, for example an estimate of the cost per click is:

    Flowers: £1.03
    Flower Arrangements: £0.52
    Artificial Flowers: £0.35
    Foam Flowers: £0.28
    Foam Flower Arrangements: £0.28

These type of prices are the reason why adwords isn't any use for businesses that make a fairly low profit per item unless they have a very high conversion rate (percentage of people who view the site and go on to make a purchase). I have a site where I get lots of visits but the conversion rate is about 100:1. If I used adwords it would cost me £100 to get £30 worth of business.
  • You have all been so helpful and I have spent some time completing each of the options you advised. My business is an artificial flower business, its more of a hobby at the moment that I'm hoping could turn into something more. I think adwords is a little expensive for me at this stage as quotememiserable said. However I am going to continue with the above.

Load Google Analytics onto your website, this will tell you EVERYTHING about how traffic interacts with your site and show you what keywords people are actually using, the keywords tools can be very inaccurate.

Whenever you find keywords that are resulting in traffic that stays on your site for a good amount of time via Google Analytics, put the keyword into Google and if you are not top 3/4 for that keyword, make sure you copy the backlinks for the sites that are and you target that keyword naturally within your website.

Also, to target local use keywords found via Analytics and just add local towns and cities, and counties on the end within your website and within Adwords, as these will be cheap to run as they are local and highly specific.
