Whistling House Alarm

Hi , this is going to sound really silly but my House alarm has started whistling... it did it a few weeks ago in the night but stopped.. now today the window cleaner asked me 'whats that whistling noise'. I think maybe I have got used to it and don't hear it anymore.. sometimes its so high pitched it sounds like a bird too.....

What happens is an intermittant high pitched whistle a bit like a steaming kettle comes from the box on the front of the house , sometimes it last a couple of seconds and sometimes a minute or two... there is nothing showing on the panel in the house, (it has a fault light) and I am really stumped.. We don't actually use the alarm and I am frightened to tamper with it in case I set it off..... it was installed before we moved in...
Anyone got an idea?

When was it last serviced ?
Is it mains or wireless ?

Could be the battery is on the way out and this is a warning "chirp"
or it could be the sounder is faulty.

I never even realised they needed to be serviced oops...

Its mains not wireless , I guess I better dig out the paperwork that the previous owner left and get someone in to take a look....
