How to claim disabled premium on IB JSA?

Hello i'm new here and came across this site whilst looking for an answer to the ever-confusing benefit system.

I recently had to leave my job directly related to having Epilepsy which i receive middle rate of care DLA and lower rate mobility.

I went to the job centre for my first interview today (wow what an experience but i'll not get onto that.)

I asked the advisor whether or not i would be entitled to see a disability employment advisor as there's many jobs it would be unsafe for me to do, and also if i could claim the disabled premium with my IB JSA and she didn't have a clue. Her answer was "uh... no i don't think so".

If anyone has any advise on what i can claim could you please help me out?

Much thanks, Louise x

I even have a friend who is on ESA and was told by his Work Provider that he is required to work for 30 hours in the voluntary sector or lose his benefits - only to find out 15 months later after an A&E admission due entirely to having to work those hours that he should never have been made to do it - bit late now!!! Apology forthcoming? No! - the provider now says that it was my friend that insisted that they help find him some full time voluntary work!!!

Wow, i can't believe that your friend was deemed unable to do full time paid work but they made him do full time unpaid work instead! That's shocking. With any luck i'll get to see the disability employment advisor. I'm hoping to get back into work as soon as possible but like i said there's a lot of jobs i can't do. Unfortunately i think i fall between the definitions of "able to work" and "not able to work". I am ready and willing to work it's just that there's huge restrictions >.<
  • OP if your epilepsy is making working difficult/impossible then you might want to claim ESA as opposed to JSA

Thanks, that might be something i can bring up with the DEA when i see her. I did think about ESA but then i thought that it was only for people who really can't work. ie doesn't the doc have to sign a sick note to that effect?

I am still looking for a job (part time) and if i can't find one i'm going to try volunteering on a part time basis.

Main thing is wondering whether or not i am entitled to the disability premium or not. They certainly don't make it easy to find out and i feel like i'm being led a merry dance by the job centre

    Thank you so much! :A

My care is shared between family members who are all working so none of them are able to claim carers allowance for me. I often pay them for things ie petrol etc needed to get around to hospital appointments and stuff.

I'm glad i found this site.
