Wooden floors - reclaimed wood?

We've been thinking about getting wooden floors for a while and have decided with kids and cats it is the best thing for us.

We can't afford all wood and don't want all laminate but were thinking of getting the one with a top layer of wood with laminate underneath.

I then wondered if it would be possible to source some reclaimed wood and get a local builder to fit it, so hopefully get a better quality floor for less money.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Is this something feasible or will it still cost an arm and a leg? We are in a 3 bed mid terrace house in the south-east and are needing our lounge and dining room done.

Finally, does anyone have a ball park figure on the cost to get the floors done using a local business (not the reclaimed wood option)? Hundreds? Thousands?

Many thanks.

  • Hello Smile,

I am about to do just the same thing in South East London too! Gonna get some reclaimed wood and add a layer of that on top of my wooden floor for better insulation. If I find something great will let you know, but if you have already found a great solution let me know.

    Hi
I have 2 large dogs and a cat and my sitting room opens out onto the garden - its a nightmare. Theres no point in buying a new carpet because inside a week it would be ruined and I cant afford a posh type of flooring. What I have decided to do is take up the carpet and varnish the floorboards like I have on my stairs and bedrooms - its so much easier and floorboards arent too slippy for my dogs.
