  • I wouldn't use gel capsules ever.

Is there any reason for that?? Just curious if theres is something bad in them?

My son has bad eczema. The dermatologist advised I wash his clothes and bedding in Surcare or Ecover. She said not to use fabric conditioner, not even Surcare or Ecover. I don't find a huge difference not using fabric conditioner in his washing.

I wouldn't use gel either - makes my washing machine smell if it's used for a while. Never had a problem with a smelly machine when I use powder.

I also do an extra rinse when I do his laundry. I don't use Ecover though. I find it has a smell which I can't stand.

I would advise you not to use fabric conditioner anymore. I had a rash on my arms and legs for about a month without knowing what was causing it. Turned up I become allergic to fabric conditioner all of a sudden.

So strange we always used Fairy non bio & my daughter had a really bad bout of eczema started around August, contacted P&G to see if the formula had changed as we weren't sure what had triggered the reaction & they say it hasn't. Probably just a coincidence but funny it's happened to someone else who uses Fairy recently. We have been using Surcare & her skin has calmed down.

It's relatively common to become allergic to something you use regularly, in fact far more common than a novel substance.

my wife bought a new washing powder the other week, she did one load dried them out and i put on my undies and trousers, 10 mins later i was.....umm...feeling rather uncomfortable :oimmediatly removing said items i rinsed my... area... in the bathroom and informed my wife that i had a reaction to whatever she had bought, she threw out the powder put the clean clothes back in the washer for a rinse, (and the washer looked like we had thrown in some powder!!) removing clothes again we rinsed the machine empty on boil with a good dose of white vinegar.

my...area had calmed down a bit but was still left with what felt like pins and needles there, a day or two later, a rash appeared inbetween my ummm dangly bits:D, and a hell of a itch ensued :o, then the itch turned into an unbearable feeling (thing of sitting in stingy nettles with no sign of calming down:mad:).
OH went to the chemist, asked about said itchy rash (i could bring myself to go with her...well would you when youve got your hand down your trousers to stop the undies meterial making it 10Xworse:o 100%cotton BTW), canisten was the pharmacists advice, and if that didnt sooth the EXTERNAL ITCH:o then a trip to the docs was the advice.

ok so cream was in order, i applied, and it relieved about 10% of the itch, but by now the rash has spread to my inner thy's, my...dangly bits:D my...my...well up to my coxics and every where in between where my undies made contact that day:o.

got so severe, that i was scratching to relive the itch in my sleep:eek:. and then i couldnt sleep:mad:, all that seemed to relieve the itch was a good old scratch em danno :D even to parts that you wouldnt normally sctratch with a finger:eek::D:rotfl:or a hot bath (i dont put cold in my bath anyway i like the burning sensation on my skin when i get in for some odd reason:().

so being a saturday, the Wife says im calling out of hours, it needs to be seen (WHAT NOOOOOO i thought to myself), she makes the appointment, we turn up in the hopes that a male doc is on, we took the troops (my kids) with us so my wife had to stay with them when i was called in.

i got to the door, and my heart leaped, it was a female doctor (i know i know theyve seen it all before! your thinking but im talking about a mans pride, my sanity, and the sheer embarresment, im about to go through), we sit down (im flush red in the face wich is rare for me, and a dead give away for her), and the convo starts from there, so whats the problem with MR S today, i start as above, and then doc's face starts to turn red! :j not only me then, i ask doc if theres a male doc in and unfortunatly its a all female shift that day!... my luck... so the dead had to done, its not every day i get to be told to drop em and jump on the bed i can tell you;)..but the good thing was it wasnt thrush, it wasnt a burn, it wasnt dermatitus, or jock itch, the bad things was she didnt really have an explanation other than allergic reaction, and a further allergic reaction to canisten:mad::mad: in her opinion, (and that was the quickest i ever wanted to pull em up in my entire life too:p), the wife wasnt pleased but i reminded her who was the one that picked the phone up and made the call to Out Of Hours, its OK we joked about it all the way home!!.

so what was prescribed? daktacort ointment, antihistamin (find a good old strong one for allergy and specifically skin allergy in the list). has it worked, well it has but i still feel it, so i know its not over yet, but atleast i can walk and when my head decides to knock off to sleep ill get some shut eye aswell (but thats a whole other issue relating to my MH).

so i feel for you OH, but perhaps he can have a read of what ive had to go through and thank his lucky stars!!.

so if it gets really bad, and itchy see the doc.

jeeze did i really share this with a bunch of strangers on a forum! ......(atrix walks away feeling very :o ).

Glad you're ok, Atrix. I think us ladies have to have these sort of embarrassing examinations quite often by men and women so you're lucky you're a man and probably won't have to do it again! I always ask for a nurse (they're all women in my practice).

One of the doctors from Embarrassing Bodies was on the tv a few weeks ago and said "if you think that some of the conditions on that programme are horrible - we see far worse in our surgeries!" So doctors are used to seeing all sorts of body parts and horrible conditions.

I am aware of that but I also remember that my experience with eczema started when a well know washing powder brand changed to a "New Improved" formula so I thought there was no harm in emailing Fairy & I got a £10 voucher for my trouble.

    Hi

Atrix I hope your nether regions have recovered from that !
I can only use the 1% canesten, not the stronger one.

We have used persil non bio powder for a while, but the fragrance seemed to have changed, along with the 'new improved' - surprise surprise ! It makes me sneeze now. I hate it when you find something that agrees with you and then it's changed. We used to use the regular persil liquid, not conc, and also sainsburys aloe veral non bio liquid, again not conc. Certainly for us, I prefer the less fragranced and not concentrated detergents. But it's getting harder to find ones that aren't concentrated.

I tried surcare powder for a while but I didn't find it great on rugby stains that my lot produce. I notice sainsburys near us now stocks a large size box of it. Has anyone tried the surcare liquid ?

    Regards

    Trigger

    @atrixblue - ouch! :eek:

The only time I've known someone to have a bad reaction to a washing powder was a few years ago when some of my uni friends tried a really cheapo brand, think it was kwik-save no frills. They actually had to throw their clothes away that'd been washed in it, - no amount of rinsing could get the stuff out and it made them itch like hell!

It made me very wary of cheap washing powders!! These days I tend to get Surcare powder, or Ecover liquid for delicates/wools. I also find Persil and Ariel are ok, but I don't use much of them.
