Tax credit contradictory alleged overpayment letters

Help please, i'm going mad... HMRC have send me two letters over the last two weeks... the first stated please pay back £1410. the second arrived last week, with a completely random contradictory amount, I don't know where they pluck these from as they don't come with any explanation of why and where, or any details whatsoever, just please pay..!
I don't trust the system and for years have queried everything, I received a one off payment one time and phoned them and said are you sure, to be 100% sure it wasn't a mistake before any of it was spent, I was in dispute about some previous amounts from several years back, and I literally have not heard anything for years until the first letter that states: "we appreciated that you may not have heard from us about this debt recently. and that you may want to talk to us about it" ... theres not info with it and I've tried several times to phone but after half and hour on a 0845 number put phone down as don't want to sit on an expensive line all day. The system is incredibly frustrating because they simply don't know whats going on, a few years ago I got similar letters which came and the following had different amounts quoted complete mix up... so if I do owe something then don't mind having some kind of small payment plan ongoing out of present payments... but who knows the right amount or in fact if its actually correct?
I'm at a loss, I'm in the process of writing another letter explaining the frustrations etc and how letters like this can affect a persons mental health, but would like to ask for advice from members for help, or what have done/would do?
Many thanks all.
