Text to Speech facility on PC

Hi, my poor Dad is progressively losing his sight and has been trying to make use of the 'Narrator' Text to Speech (TTS) facility within XP. Trouble is, it doesn't seem to work very well. I can't make it read text either, I've tried both MS Word and Notepad documents. My Dad has also failed to make it read his files within Works.
Does anybody have any experience of Narrator, or could perhaps recommend an alternative TTS system that my Dad could try that will more easily read his word processing text files? Thank you. Tabs
