Can you get to a Debenhams? Might be worth a look to see what they've got in their sale.
I'm a bit of a Debenhams addict actually - even have their storecard (paid off every month, of course) which I took out for the sake of a double discount on a major purchase. The thought of getting my knife there had occurred to me. Wonder if they also have slow cookers in the sale....

Might try there on Sunday when I next have to be in the Oxford Street area (I avoid it like the plague and never go there just for shopping!)

I only just stopped sleeping with a rolling pin and facing the door all the time.
I gave one of his 'super sharp' knives to a builder friend next door because he didn't have one.
by the way I hope you all know the tradition that you should never give knives as a gift really, you are supposed to 'pay' the giver.

  • I am splitting with my husband who is getting custody of our set of hideously expensive Global knives. We've had them a few years, but, like all knives they get blunt after a while even when they cost £40 a knife! I recently bought a set of similar looking knives at TK Maxx (right down to the little dots on the handles) in their own block. £16 for 5 knives, all super-sharp and lovely looking. Makes giving up the Global ones much easier. I think, unless you can afford to buy expensive and be bothered to sharpen them regularly, buy cheap and replace often. (Not very Green. Sorry).
  • Im looking to buy a new set of kitchen knives. Ive got about £50 to play with.
Can anyone recomend some? I want some nice quality ones. Ive seen these ones at M&S.. they have 20% off: https://www.marksandspencer.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=4997&Product_Id=1135716
    This makes them £44 pound.

    TIA

I have some of those with stainless steel handles but I hate them. They are difficult to hold and I don't like the feel! I have some from my favourite store, Lakeland Ltd, they have ergonomic shaped handles and are great, very easy to use. HTH.

I've got quite a few knives - some of which were my husband's when he was a butcher, so they're really good, and of course he sharpens them regularly. My fave knife is a kitchen devils chefs knife. The blade is really narrow so that helps with precision slicing. I don't keep my knives in a block and definitely not in a drawer. They're out of reach of the kids on a piece of wood with magnetic strips to hold the knives in place.

I like the old favourite sabatier. I only have one at the moment and have a couple others from Ikea. I would suggest not buying a 'set' but buying a couple that you know you will use, you can always add as and when you want.

Seconding getting a chinese cleaver. You can get one for around £8, make sure you keep it sharp, and it will last forever. I'd recommend getting a wooden handled one, the metal ones are very heavy. Should set you back around £8. It's very useful for crushing things (garlic) and cleaning the surface after use (scrape all the rubbish away using the end).

I mentioned the ikea ones, what i dont like about them is they have very brightly coloured handles, and therefore enticing to children. Mine are way way up on a high shelf in the kitchen.
I had a cleaver but the 1st husband got that when we separated. :(
