There isn't a rule against banks offering you credit cards. The bank is not going to just let you off the hook. Don't borrow money you can't afford to pay back, and if its too late for that then you need to carefully consider all your options, including bankruptcy.Giving a student such a high limit is irresponsible and simply encouraging you to go out and spend. And it's probably against your human rights.
I'd definitely put in a claim for compo for the distress and inconvenience of dealing with debt collectors etc.
