I love Stylecraft Special DK - it comes in loads and loads of colours and is fairly cheap at £1.89 a ball in my local shop (it's widely available online though) - it's acrylic but lovely and soft and really easy to work with

When I was knitting I got most of my wool on Ebay at a reasonable price.0

Thanks for the great advice - the wool I bought is stylecraft DK in heather - glad it has been reccommended!! I am taking notes (literally) and will be following the good advice on offer
thank youLove reading the oldstyle board...always something to learn!0 -
Stylecraft isn't wool - its acrylic. As acrylic yarns go its pretty good but natural fibres will keep you warmer without being sweaty, though they are generall more expensive. Alpaca is currently my fav - soft and snuggly - and cheaper than cashmere!! Merino wool tends to be softer and smoother and less itchy than standard wool and wuld be a good choice, cheaper still would be cotton -which I'd use in preference to acrylicPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Hey,
I decided to learn to knit this week too! Haven't found videos very helpful, just the way I learn I guess. I was recommended to this website for lessons and I manged to do quite a bit on my first night. Have a look, there is a very simple way to cast on

Good luck!0 -
I have decided to learn to knit, I have never tried knitting before and have bought myself a knitted farm animals book and a knitted animal hats book. I have a lot to learn before I attempt any of those.
I was just looking on ebay at some of the recommend wool to make one of the hats and it is quite pricey.
I am going to order some knitting needles from ebay and see how I go
Thank you for the link
