What a lovely gift! Do you know what kind of wool you would be looking for and what project you are thinking of? There are a number of good online shops I could recommend and for pattern ideas Ravelry is always worth visiting.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

charity shops often have a few balls of wool going cheap, Aldi has some yarn in at the moment and Kemps is always good to check out online0

Thanks found some in a charity shop - double knit and asked a 'gran' and she said it would make a great scarf
I am so new - need to learn how to cast on...had a look at that site and so very confused by what they mean - going to try one = with the help of youtube!!Love reading the oldstyle board...always something to learn!0 -

Hi there hope you can soon master knitting, it's a very good hobby and good for keeping your brain active. I use Deramores an online store, sign up for the news letter and they often send you offers. Happy Knitting£180.00 in 'sistercas'fund
Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.

I use kemps online they have lots of wool at quite a reasonable price and quick delivery. You can also get some good bargains in their sale bit.

Thanks will defintely have a look online - I have started and took an hour to cast on and knit two rows....I am slighty OCD and I reckon this will help me lose weight as I did not even snack last night!!Love reading the oldstyle board...always something to learn!0

Lots of charity shops sell new wool at reasonable prices, I also buy from The Factory Shop and a card shop, I pay between £1.10 and £1.50 for 100grms of DK. Hope you are enjoying your new hobby.Slightly bitter0

Through trial and error I have found you get what you pay for with wool. If you are going to the trouble of knitting a scarf for the first time you want it to be something you actually want to wear rather than it itching you. Otherwise would the effort be worth it?!;)
Get Knitted (online and in Bristol) and Loop (online and in London) stock a fab range of yarns. If you are looking for something affordable I can recommend King Cole Baby Alpaca DK which is incredibly soft and snuggly.
I too find it a great way of stopping snacking in the evenings but do like to enjoy a glass of wine whilst doing so perhaps that cancels out the snacking!:)
Good luck. There's a great site called Ravelry which is a community of knitters/crocheters who can help and there are loads of free patterns on there if you get more confident!0
