You get a new car on lease by surrendering your mobility money.

A second hand car is a good choice for some.
There are no provisions for purchasing second hand cars through the motability scheme.

Motability is especially good value if you can't afford to buy the car up-front, or are uncomfortable with a car with no warranty, or if insurance is expensive.

    Otherwise, it may be questionable.

Be aware that a _LARGE_ fraction of DLA HRM recipients will lose their motability car when their HRM goes away due to the upcoming change to PIP.
If you have bought a car using the money before then, then you of course keep the car.
    Otherwise, it goes back.

    - no you would need an upfront large wad of cash money to begin with
    - your friend buys the second hand car with her 'own money'
    - your friend gets to keep the £54+ per week DLAHRM money
    - your friend gets a free annual tax disk

Your friend has been told wrong, or has misunderstood - she can get a brand new leased Motability car every three years in return for handing over every penny of her DLAHRM award - or she can buy her own out of as it were her purse if and when she can afford it !

The hire purchase scheme still exists, the criteria for entry is obviously much harder to overcome and much more complicated than the standard leasehire one. The Hire purchase scheme 2011-2012 accounted for less than a half of one percent of the whole motability system. The scheme is no longer 'promoted' by both motability and the motability dealers.

To even begin to consider this option a prospective buyer must have an impeccable credit record, and sufficient up front cash to pay for fully comprehensive insurance, the deposit on the vehicle, the road tax the vehicle before they even drive it off the forecourt, then they also have to shoulder all maintenance costs from tyres to big ticket items.

However the above misses the critical point, that of would / will motabilty agree to a hire purchase agreement in the first place. You see it was initially designed in the first and place to accommodate that small group of individuals who :

    - had an existing motabilty 'lease-hire' car rescinded [chucked out] because of 'insurance' claims
    - and who, as a result would have their mobility so severely restricted as to make their life unbearable
    - as far as I'm aware that's still the starting criteria

    NOTE:

I stand by my initial comments to the O/P that the notion you could easily walk into a dealer and get an interest free hire-purchase agreement for 'virtual' instead of real bundles of £50 notes cash is a non-goer.

  • Don't know if motability still do the HP scheme i have bought a couple of second hand cars through motability, my current car was bought second hand through motability, and in another year the car will be mine, the rule was it had to be under 3 years old and less than 40,000 miles on the clock,
  • Why did they scrap that scheme, I bought my car after leasing it for 3 years due to a couple of accidents and RSA refusing to insure me again, Id of been lost without it

No idea - it certainly would help right now.

Motability is not what it used to be, probably because of the many so called 'disabled' that have fudged through their DLA claim. Nearly everyone I come across at the moment seems to be using a Motability car and most are petrified and very angry that the government are looking to take it off them - how dare they!!

The DWP monitor fraud levels on DLA.
Despite the fact that finding 30% of people on DLA are benefit cheats would be politically extremely desirable, claimant fraud remains at about half a percent.
Claiming what you are entitled to is not fudging,

I think so too! It's about time that these 'free' cars are only given to the most deserving of cases and not those that think some petty condition entitles them to it.

Ah that would be the DWP and ATOS then for the majority of those that have had to have medicals. Me included.

I am glad that the fact my as then undiagnosed petty condition caused by a birth defect and several years military service deems me in your eyes to not to be disabled enough to have mobility needs, but hey its your taxes.

Oh and mine, seeing as I have been in employment since the age of 16, but you stick to you bigoted views.

As for DLA fraud it happens, buts it's harder to prove and get the evidence for as most if not all claimants have medical evidence to back up the application.

But if you can think of a better way to cut back on the "less" disabled then lets hear it?

Mind you I would be more worried with the chip on your and MrBill's shoulders, it surely must be causing a bad back!

It's a myth that Motability have stopped their HP scheme, they have just hidden it away as it's better for them to get people on the lease scheme.
    Hire Purchase
Almost all of our customers opt for contract Hire, which includes all the benefits of our worry-free leasing package. it is possible to buy a car outright using Hire Purchase, but this does not include insurance, servicing, maintenance and breakdown cover. if you would like further information on this, please call our customer Services team on 0845 456 4566
