house insurance changing from buildings and contents to seperate policies

Hi,
Have a question which hopefully isn't too complicated. I currently have buildings and contents insurance with the same provider which is due for renewal in just over a week. I have had a quick look round and looks as though I can get it a lot cheaper if I split it into two policies and with the added bonus of quidco on top. However I have a few questions
Firstly I assume there are definitely no problems with having buildings cover with one insurer and contents with another?
Secondly I claimed off my current insurer about 18 months ago when my shower leaked and the claim came to about £3 500. All the work that was done was to the house i.e. new floorboards, drying the wall out, new floor tiles in the bathroom and a new carpet in the hallway. I assume all this comes under buildings cover, rather than say the new carpet on the contents side of things? If I am correct in saying that then I have never claimed on the contents side of my current cover so when I get quotes for the separate policies can I say I have 1 year no claims on the buildings policy and 5+ years no claims on the contents?
Thanks for any help

I have always had my Building and Contents with the same insurer. The main reason is to avoid demarkation arguements between two companies delaying payment.
As far as the 'no-claims' is concerned you will generally be asked 'have you had any claims or losses in the last 5 years' the answer to that HAS to be yes in my opinion.I have retired from a career in Financial Services........Thank God. Any advice given may be as a result of senile dementia so dont take it too seriously.......

It depends on what each insurer classes as contents and what as buildings.
Even within the same company there will be arguements about what is what- for example alot of people reckon carpets that are not glued down are contents.0
