ill child giving up A levels - child benefit ? other benefit

hi - grateful for any help pls
we have 16yr old (17 shortly) sick child, for 1 year now, its apparent they will have to give up their newly taken up 6th form place as making condition worse- (hoping to be well enough to start again next sept)
will we loose our child benefit when they finish?,

Is there any thing else we may be able entitled to claim, we dont claim any other benfits, we are both self employed on low income and probably need to start finding out what we are entitled to based on our low income
we do have to spend considerable time with our child
thx j

You will need to let the tax credits know as well as child benefit that the child has left education.
You may be entitled to working tax credits depending on your income.

If she registers with Connexions you'll be able to continue your CB/CTC claim for a period.

If she needs a lot of help from you and if this is expected to be the case for at least 6 months she might qualify for Disability Living Allowance. Information is here:

The website above also has a benefits calculator to see if you might qualify for any other help based on your income.

She is unable to go to college, or work. She is now getting ESA in her own right... which is more than Child Benefit. I don't know if this is down to her getting DLA or not.

They do allow a 'run-on' of CB, especially if you let them know the situation. But (but don't quote me), you may be better off with them claiming ESA. You will lose CB and any CTC if they do though.

Also, check Working Tax Credits, as they will continue if you are working.

As I understand it, child benefit may continue in payment, if the child is ill, and intending to continue study.
However, it's been a while since I looked at this.
