Samphire

I saw some ladies picking green stuff off a cliff in cornwall - being nosy I asked what they were doing - picking samphire. I was invited to try some and loved it! OH hated it - said it tasted like yacht varnish.........(when did he ever eat yacht varnish?).
they explained they sold it to local restaurants - nice profit! the stuff was free! this was in May/early June and apparently this is the best time to pick. it can be frozen after blanching.0 -
I love samphire, but it's out of season now? Did you buy it in the supermarket? If so, I guess its imported from another country. If its from this country it will be really woody and unpleasant at this time of year.
I usually serve it quickly boiled with a big slodge of butter and a grind of black pepper, either as an accompaniment to a fish dish, or as a simple supper with fresh bread and butter. It's nice served with poached eggs too!
Ah, interesting! I got some the other day reduced in the supermarket (but not as low as 15p) and it was rather woody. DS2 hated it, but I loved it.
