A firewall will only block and prevent unwanted incoming connections and attacks.
You will also need an AV like closed said. Avast is a good one yeah, also 'Windows Security Essentials' is the free basic but sufficient one available out there.
Nothing is ever completely secure i suggest installing 1x Firewall, 1x Anti Virus and explain about what pages she shouldn't tend to drift off on and which she should keep to.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0 -
It'll probably have an antivirus installed already with a limited trial period. If you decide to install any other, whatever you install I would make sure you remove the old one first.

Ensure everything is updated when you get it. It possible that factory installed programs are already outdated and vulnerable. That in itself is a security risk.

Avast, Avira or MSE are all good and free.
Or Kaspersky is free for 3 PC's with Barclays online banking.
If it's got a trial edn of McAfee pre-installed, get shot of it at once.No free lunch, and no free laptop
