Am in the process of getting a new kitch and am very tempted by IKEA but have heard their sizes are a bit strange????Also their measuring up is very difficult to do imho!
Also would like to know where are generally the cheapest/best made kitchens from !
In fact am so thick about things like this any advice/opinions,most gratefully recieved thanks in advance!!

I work in the kitchen industry and thats the problem with flat pack units. If you get someone in to measure up and order units according to the size you actually need its a lot easier. Otherwise youll have to make your kitchen fit their units.

Id never buy a flat pack kitchen, and im not just saying that because i work with them everyday, its just a fact that flat pack is cack.
  • Hi,

Just to let you know that I thought MFI were really good. I'm getting my kitchen fitted by them on 21st June. For a medium size kitchen (2 corner base unit, 1 larder unit, 1 base drawer unit, 3 other base units, 1 base wine rack unit,7 wall units (2 with glass doors) an intergrated dishwasher, cooker, hob and glass extractor fan for £3750 and thats fully fitted. They were so good that I got my bathroom from them too, (shower, double ended bath, in built wc (housed in a base unit) and a feature storage cabinet where the sink goes) all fully fitted for £1790.
  • Hiya, Can I ask which model kitchen u have gone for. We had a quote yesterday from MFI and our cupboards needed are similar to yours. We need about 5 bottom cupboards including 2 corner units, 5 wall cupboards, 2 with glass doors, one 3 drawer unit and an extractor - and they quoted us near enough £3000 and said it would be "about" double that to fit it as well - seeing your quote im in a mind to haggle majorly with that price! We went for the white gloss slab design. Still shopping around though.

    Thanks!

So you would advice getting someone in and getting a made to measure kitchen especailly if your kitchen is not standard?

We could only afford a standard B and Q kitchen when our kitchen was extended 15 years ago but its lasted - really we needed a new one five years ago. We are realsing now we need one that four adults can cook in and one that will look good enough to sell the house when the nest is empty!

Our internal wall between the two houses is not straight, old railway mens cottages, so the builder attatched a stud wall to hang the units off. Our basic layout suits us - it is a very long galley kitchen. We would really like one of those tall units that pulls out but I dont think there is enough of a walk way in the middle. Also one of those huge fridges with ice makers but again I dont think that is possible.

So if we went to a carpenter and said basically we want the same again, possibly just the doors or the doors plus carcasses but on legs, no floor plinths, they would be able to do it. How do we go about finding a carpenter? Its basically ten bottom cupboards and 6 wall ones, could reslly do with more!

I'm struggling trying to get units to go right to the ceiling like Ikea's do.

B&Q do 900 mm wall cabinets, but MFI only seem to do up to 720mm.

Anyone know who else's go to the ceiling?

Obviously you have a PC so why not download the Ikea kitchen planning software and try that out?

In the Ikea displays I've seen they simply stack their smaller units don't they?

buy the appliances from your nearest Euronics store - they should price match as near as poss to the lowest internet price....we bought a double oven, ceramic hob and dishwasher about 6 years ago - all Neff - for £1700...Comet had just the hob at 999, oven at 1299 and dishwasher at 699

the euronics near us in Woodley, Reading still price match....as we've just bought a Miele washing machine at 247electric.co.uk's price.

dont buy the appliances in the kitchen fitters place as they charge silly money for crap makes....whirlpool, hotpoint (I know our new house has a Hotpoint dishwasher and whilst its new, its unbelievably crap).

Our Wickes kitchen is very solidly built - thick carcasses and the wall units easily take dinner plates. As already mentioned, they do tend to have lots of 'sales' but are always worth pricing up to compare as we found their quality to be excellent and we managed to install it all ourselves!
