I've used a mixture of a DAP diffuser and zylkene tablets for stressful times. I do think the both worked very well together, and would definitely use them again.

probably not acceptable now,but i had a greyhound that the vet used to prescribe ACP,she was extremely nervous and frightened when she heard fireworks.got to say i worked wonders for her.i actually thought she was going to have a heart attack the way she got worked up about the noise from fireworks.but there are probably better remedies you can bbuy now

ACP is not recommended anymore. People still request it because it flattens the dog so much they cannot react to the fireworks, so it makes the owners life easier, but most people, once we explain to them that the poor dog is still absolutely terrified but just can't show it anymore, will accept alternatives.
I have heard very good things about the thundershirts.

Give the pheremone (can't spell) diffuser a go. I used it recently to chill out my boy who was stressing about house move. Worked a treat. Will be using it for my female one over fireworks night as she hates it.

I've recently adopted a rescue dog and have 2 indoor cats. I went to my vet with the intention of buying diffusers: 1x cat and 1x dog, but, at around £30+ for each that was a very pricey option and I was concerned that one might counteract the other. So, I spoke to the vetenary nurse and she pointed out the diffusers only work within a certain radius.

Instead, she recommended a capsule for the cats (Zylkene) which could be mixed with their food (so, in their system ;) ) and for the dog, she recommended a collar called Adaptil; like a dog diffuser, it releases certain pheromones which a mother dog would release and it lasts 4 weeks. Being around the dogs neck means it is never without this scent.

Interestingly, having set all this up for the rehoming day, at our "pre-adoption talk" that morning ... what were the dogs wearing? Yup, an "Adaptil" collar! Not quite the price of a diffuser (but almost!) but definately more effective due to being in constant contact with the dog.

The Zylkene does need to be administered before the event, but actually only 24hrs beforehand - so, no need for a lengthy beforehand at all, thus, still time if that is the route the OP wishes to take (plus it would reduce the overall costs of trying to ply the dog with this product between *now* and Bonfire Night ;) )

A problem arises because, unfortunately, fireworks are not simply for Bonfire Night anymore and, in my area and experience, they will be let off from anytime now through to New Year!! In which case, the Adaptil collar would probably be a better, safer, bet.

Let us know what you decide OP and how you coped.

It's Hindu Diwali and something important for Muslims (can't recall what :o) after Bonfire Night I think.

  • Two products that we have found that work for are skullcap and valerian tablets and also anxiety drops (which can just be added to drinking water). Both of these have been known to help nervousness in dogs.
