Stolen Passport- travel insurance

My son recently had a bag stolen with his passport the day before we were due to fly to New York. He tried to claim for the flight on his insurance and he was told he was not covered as under cacellation and curtailment it specified he needed all travel documents. I would welcome views before I challenge this. maryg

    I would certainly challenge this.
Surely this is what travel insurance is for.... for goodness sake.
I would expect to be paid out for the flight cancellation at the very least.
And whilst you are about it clain for every single thing you can think of as well.
Cost of passport / postage / letters / the bag it was in / cash / etc etc
Best of luck with your claim

Cancellation covers for Personal Travel Insurance are almost always written on a specified perils basis, that is they say precisely in what circumstances you can claim, rather than an all risks, 'claim for any circumstance not specifically excluded' basis. I would be surprised if the circumstance you outlined is covered under the cancellation section of many personal travel insurance policies. I have an NU policy and it is not under there.

That said there is cover for up to £500 for additional travel expenses incurred as a result of loss of such documents, within my policy.

It may be worth checking if your sons policy has such a section on it.
