I had these certificates all the way through my university tenure, for full costs - I didnt pay a penny for prescriptions, dental, eye tests etc.

I think however, that was becasue I was on max loan, living in the south (where everything is more expensive) and it actually worked out that my accommodation costs for my 12 month contract only left me with £500 per year to live on from my loan, and I was continually applying for additional help and working. It depends on the income in and out - if your parents are paying for accommodation etc then you have the loan/parent subsidy's to live on, and 'can' afford to pay.

It might also be worth nipping into your student health centre, or student union, all the uni's I have seen have the application forms there for you to pick up at your leisure.

    Clearly, I couldnt!

If its for s*xual health issuels then you can get the pill and other concerceptives free at family planning clinics and some uni nurses.
I know some student health centres have the basic things but you can get most of them in Superdrug as well
I remember when this was just a little website! :money:

All contraceptives are free of charge to females with a prescription regardless of age income etc
I know the rules of punctuation and grammer I just choose to ignore them (or forget them half the time)... Apologies in advance
  • I went to uni in Liverpool, had to pay for a couple of prescriptions but I had some friends who used to drive into Wales to get theirs free.

Some years ago they turned my son down when he filled an HC 1 in. As his rent was almost all of his student loan I phoned up to ask them what he was supposed to live on. He had told them that I gave him £25.00 per week and it was just this small amount that stopped him getting the certificate. I told them that I was no longer giving him the £25 because I could not afford it. I was told to get him to fill another form in an resubmit it, which he did and from then on he got the certificate.

I have always told my other son who is now at uni, not to tell them I give him anything, and he has never had a problem, he he has got the certificate every year.

You really have to plead poverty to get any worthwhile help. Any employment, savings or anything else seems to count against you.

Best to find somewhere more expensive to live and fritter your loan away gambling, then you'll get the free prescriptions no problem. Sometimes I wonder about this country

I get all my prescriptions etc free, but then I'm a single parent with 2 kids & studying full time on CTC.

Nope, not free if you're over 19. BTW, If you're under, don't forget to have an eye test and full dental checkup the week before you turn 19 while it's still free! I had to pay for a dentist appointment by 3 days :grr: couldnt get earlier appt cos of Uni holidays.
HC1 seems pretty useless. It gave me nothing :(
Best thing to do, is only get prescriptions if you need to. Often stuff is cheaper OTC (over-the-counter), and make sure you ask for generic (exactly the same stuff, but unbranded) If you;re going to need a lot of prescriptions, get one of those prepaid cards.
And don't forget contraception is all free.

ONLY FOR US GIRLS! Although of course there are, I understand, often bowls of free condoms around the university and college bars ...
