Selling car with broken cambelt - any advice?

Hi everyone

I have a car to sell... The cambelt went on it a couple of weeks ago and has not been fixed. The mechanics said that without inspection they are unable to tell if/how much damage it has caused. If it has not caused damage it will cost around £100-£150 to fix and replace. If it has caused damage it could be anything up to £800. By all accounts it is most likely it will have caused damage (it is a Vauxhall Astra GLS 1.6 "R" reg. 16V Ecotech engine.).

Obviously the car is not drivable until it has been fixed....

The first scrapyard I called offered £50. I then received a call from another (after putting an ad on gumtree) offering £120. He said he would take it away and then give me the wheels back to sell separately for £100. The car has two new tyres and alloys.

I've never been in a similar situation and just wondered if that second deal sounds reasonable? Or should I hold out with Gumtree and maybe put it on ebay too?

I would also be interested to hear from anyone who has any other ideas of the most profitable way of getting rid of this car, it's worth, etc. etc.

Many thanks

Max

(PS - hope I put this in the right forum...? Please move if not).

TRY SELLING ON EBAY AS SPARES OR REPAIR.

They seem to fetch surprising bids at times.

  • Thanks for the quick reply.

Would you put it on as a car (but for spares and repairs).... which as I understand it has a £10 listing charge and is exempt from free listing weekend?

Or is there a category I could list it in which does qualify for free listing this weekend?

    Cheers
  • If the cambelt broke while the car was running then it's unlikely to be a cheap repair job unfortunately.

I think the Ebay suggestion is a good one

I think the parts section comes under the free listing, double check before you do it though.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • I personally sell the car to a scrappy giving best price for it . Selling it as spares , probably make a bit more for it... But the hassle factor with it , taking off bits , storing them , posting them to buyers , arranging time for successfull buyer to collect parts etc . Done it myself long time ago , found it time consuming and waiting game , unable to use garage due to this . You might be okay , lucky , buyer buys it a repair .
    Anyway good luck .

    Sell it on ebay.
I sold a rover on ebay with a broken cam and knew it had bent all the valves.
Still got a tidy sum from a DIYer who towed it to fix himself for under £100 to him.
As long as you are totally open and honest in the advert, there'll be no problems getting more than a scrapper will give.

Ebay - and be prepared to be amazed when someone drives halfway across the country to collect it!

Also check cartakeback just to see if you can get more on the scrap value.

And you might want to cash the tax in/declare SORN if you have it off the road.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
