A network cable is unplugged???????

I use windows xp and have two dial up internet accounts with talk talk and fast 4 depending on which one I can connect to.

In the Network Connections window it has two sections one for dial up which has these two lited. It alsoi has one called LAN or high Speed Internet. Where it has Local Area Connection it says a network cable is unplugged. What does this mean? Does it matter?

it means that you have no network cable connected to your PC, as you might do if you had a broadband connection via cable modem or router.

Since you only use dialup connections, you need not worry about it - if it keeps popping up to tell you about the lack of network connection, delete the connection icon (right-click on it, then select delete).

Eeeek... ??? I get this message too and I have broadband... always wondered what it meant...do I need to do anything about it?

You can connect a broadband cable modem via USB or via Ethernet (network connection). My guess is you are using a USB connection to your broadband modem/router and therefore you do NOT have a network cable attached, and Windows will keep trying to tell you it is unplugged!

Now....does your broadband connection work? If so, there is no need to do anything. I am a great believer in "if it ain't broke, dont fix it" ! ;D

Yep, broadband connection works just fine...will leave well alone Thanks though..it was one of those little niggles I've always wondered about.

Same thing on my computer, and yes, it works just fine. The trouble is, when I right click on the pesky icon I don't get a 'delete' option. Instead it says 'open network connections' and when I do that, there are two icons - one says 'local area connection2 enabled' and the other one says 'local area connection network cable unplugged'. ???

This message often appears if you have a network card in the PC but you're not connected to a network e.g. I bought my PC with a card installed, ready for when I get round to setting up a home network - I have this message permanently, or rather, the icon in the tray reveals this message when I hover the mouse over it.

You could disable it, but as others have said, just ignore the message.

If you're absolutely sure that it's not used for anything at all, then yes. But if you need it in the future, you'll have to remember to enable it back again. You can just leave things as they are - no harm done (apart from annoying message).

Or you could disable it, reboot and see if any problems occur. If they do, you can use System Restore in XP to put things back or simply enable the network card.

In Control Panel, Network Connections, right click on the network connection and disable.

Are you sure you don't need this for a broadband connection ....?

Sorry, that was really meant as a semi-suggestion for weatherwax to try.

It is possible to turn off the media sense in WinXP, which should prevent the message appearing. The method involves a Registry change though, but if you are happy with doing that, take a look here: MS KB 239924
