Point in the right direction?

A solicitor has tracked me down to tell me I have been named the beneficiary in a will of a lady I knew a long time ago. Letter arrived yesterday and didn't allude to what I have been left other then saying 'the funds are now ready to be released' so I am assuming it is money, but I have no idea how much.

So i can be prepared, can anyone point me in the direction of a thread or website which explains how the money will affect my benefits so I can inform the relevant departments. I currently claim IS, CTC, HB and CTB.

Like I say, I dont know how much it is until I speak to the solicitor tomorrow but I just want to be prepared. For all I know it could be £100 or it could be £100,000.

Thank you.

    Well, let's hope it's £100000 :)

    Put simply...........

Savings that affect IS, CTB and HB - over £16000 and you're not entitled. Under £6000 you are entitled. Between £6000 and £16000 there is money deducted.

CTC - savings are not counted unless you earn £300 or more interest a year on them.

Just google each benefit with 'and savings' and lots of links will come up.

    Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you, i shall take a look. Im really surprised - they have been looking for me for 18 months. I havent seen the lady in over 5 years and all I used to do was take her for a stroll a few times a week to get her out the house. She never married and had no children so I just did my bit to enable her to get out the house.

Mentally I am spending thousands of pounds in my head, realistically im sure it will be maybe £100 or something. Hopefully the office will tell me on the phone tomorrow as I dont live local any more!

    Thanks again!

It would be great if it was a lot, wouldn't it?

I'll cross my fingers for you too.

You can bet your last £1 that the only 'beneficiary' that will have received a lot of money will be the solicitor who handled the estate!!

A friend of the family died intestate with assets (house) worth £195,000 and cash £120,000.
Being intestate there were 5 beneficaries. The solicitor handling the estate was withdrawing £5000 every 2 weeks over a 20 week period. I was one of the beneficaries and took over the estate after finding out what had been happening and more so that all had been done was to gather all of the cash (from 5 accounts), liase with the DWP and authorise an estate agent to handle the sale - costing £50,000!!!

I finished it off, sold the property, paid the debts, and carried out all of the legal matters (London Gazette etc). I charged the estate £195 as my direct expenses!!

Crikey - from the little the letter says, its all been worked out already so I wont have to do anything. I wouldnt have a clue where to start if I did!

  • I know it's sad that someone has died, but how exciting and intriguing! It could be just enough for a nice bottle of wine to toast her memory, or enough for all your money worries to be over. If it were me, I would struggle to sleep tonight!

My parents have been joking with me today - mum says its a old cat, my dad says her false teeth... Im trying not to get excited, you just never know!

I feel touched she thought of me. Obviously taking her for a walk meant more to her then I realised.

    Just a quick update!

I spoke to the solicitor this morning... I have been left £1000.

I am going to use it to take my children to Euro Disney for a few days next month.

Congratulations, enjoy the holiday, toast her with a glass of wine, and it is lovely to see some people doing something

with no expectation at the time of any reward. What you did obviously made an impact and she remembered you for it. Well done

Things I know about MrBill - he joined an internet forum in order to troll

My opinion on which has the 'entirely unproductive existence'.......:D
