The other possibility is that she was 'trained' using a throw chain/rattle bottle or similar?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

That is of course a possibility. I have no history on this dog, even her age is a guesstimate. She is somewhat toilet trained, just having issues with telling me she needs to go. She's a very quick learner though, and in the space of the 3 weeks I've had her has learned: wee wee, brush, no, good girl, sit and stay.

She's due to come into her first season at any time, so no doubt she's got hormones raging around her body as well, poor thing. She will be spayed after her first season, just for the record :)

You can buy collars with writing of your choice printed on, that could replace the ID tag?

You don't necessarily have to wait until she's had a season to spay her. However, if you suspect she's very close to coming into season now then it's advisable to wait until 3mths afterwards as the horns of the uterus will be engorged with blood and whilst it's perfectly ok to spay at this time, it's preferable to wait until everything has settled down again.

That's what I'm planning to do, wait until her blood pressure lowers after first season. I was told by vet not to spay until then, so I'll go by what he says. She needs to gain a bit of weight before any operation as well (imho) :)
