Parents get another mortgage?

  • I've rented in the past and had no issues with landlords. This one just seems to be ridiculous. We moved into the house and only after paying for our referencing did they tell us they would not be allowing the cooker to stay. We then had to fight with them to get them to move the electrics in the kitchen as they were unsafe and no one would install our cooker that we had to purchase ourselves until they were sorted. They've not repaired the broken windows that they said they would repair when we took out the tenancy (they are old sash windows) and half the windows don't even open and they came around and then said 'oh we do'nt want to break them so we can't do anything'. The letting agent is an arrogant see you next tuesday who just does not give a monkeys and only wants our money, doesn't want to help us at all.
So based on that experience, I'm sure our parents would be better landlords!!!
Bankrupt June 15th 2009. Early discharge granted March 4th 2010. Nose completely clean ever since. Got a barclays and co op basic account with debit card, own mobile contract, own gas and electric, own landline, own vanquis credit card which is paid off in full each month. Credit files cleaned up and all say satisfied.

Forgive me if you have already given this information and I've missed it - but do you both work? Would you be able to pay sufficient rent to your parents to cover the mortgage that you expect them to take out - regardless of whether it is btl or interest only - or are you expecting to be eligible for housing benefit? If the latter, what ages are you both?

Sounds like a nightmare! :( Have you reported all this to the landlord in writing so you have a paper trail? If so contact Environmental Health at your local council, they can enforce the landlord's repairing obligations - they would certainly have intervened in the electrics issue, windows not opening may be deemed a fire safety issue.

  • No we wouldn't want housing benefit, far more in need than us and we can rent privately, just rents are high. My husband is six weeks unemployed at the mo but hope that won't be for too long.

  • Fire fox, I didnt think the council would be interested if we are private tenants. We also query if there is an issue because there are no doors on our kitchen and dining room which adjoins the kitchen. Starting to think we got ripped off but because we had already paid the referencing costs of 475 we couldn't afford to lose it. Hence why we have a dislike for our letting agent.

    Environmental Health will be interested.
  • you can get housing benefit when you rent privately, it's not just for council tenants

Sorry I am confused because you used 'they' in the context of the landlord in your last post. Why you are annoyed at the letting agent? They are not responsible for the condition of the property, you need to be writing to your landlord. Repairing obligations and safety of tenants apply to ALL landlords including private ones, you are a UK resident and council tax payer so can use the services the council provide including Environmental Health.

If your parents ONLY have £45k equity, then I would be more concerned about how're they're going to pay their mortgage off given they're so close to retirement.

As far as I can see, your parents haven't even gor enough money to cover their own retirement, let alone enough for a second property!!

Rent somewhere as cheap as possibe, save, then buy your own place when you can afford it!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
