Hook up TV to laptop to watch movies, iplayer etc

I'm stuck on this one. The TV has HDMI PORTS (2) but no VGA input ports. The laptop has monitor output port but no HDMI on my version. Toshiba L300/L300D.
Apart from the scart sockets on the TV I can't see anything else except audio input and various colured ordinary round jacks which I have no idea what are there for. From what I'm reading I can't just find some kind of adapter to stick on to connect VGA out of laptop to HDMI TV as they are not compatible.
I'm not too clued up on this as is obvious.
Can anyone tell me if it's possible or am I just stuffed here? Deeply grateful for any help.

It's tricky. Sometimes graphics cards are able to output a digital signal from the VGA port in which case you can use a VGA to HDMI cable, but this isn't all that common (also, it wouldn't support audio).

You'd probably need something like this but I've heard very mixed results about them. The one I linked to does offer a refund if you're not happy with it (as should anywhere you order online)

Thanks. I found something similar on ebay but it all seems as you say a bit hit and miss. I really don't want another laptop . The one I have is hardly used anyway as I use my desktop at home and my netbook is just for travelling. Ho hum....

The other option if you wanted to shell out a bit more money you could get something like this which effectively acts as an additional graphics/sound card for your laptop. It'll provide better picture quality than outputting from VGA but if your laptop is very old/slow it may struggle to output a high enough framerate
