Hello, I'm currently joint on my OH car insurance which is used for social, domestic and pleasure only as he has a work van and I don't work.
Iv applied for some Christmas jobs to earn extra money for Christmas and was wondering when I change the use if car for commuting to work and a change of occupation would this involve a huge hike in price ?
Just wondering if its even worth looking for seasonal work especially as we will have to pay Childcare costs aswell ?
Just want to be back at work even for a short time, going stir crazy at home !
Dies anyone have any experience if this ?

There will be an admin fee to pay as well as any premium changes over this.
It won't cost you to ask your insurer how much these changes will cost before you make any decision.0 -
Travelling to and from a regular place of work is usually considered to be covered by 'social, domestic and pleasure'.0
-
As Quentin says. For example, Tesco insurance policies can be
Social, Domestic & Pleasure including commuting
or
Social, Domestic & Pleasure excluding commuting
Doesn't usually cost much difference between the two, but there will be an admin charge.
Phone them up and ask, giving as full a job title as you can for the proposed part time work. They have pretty general job titles, so might just amend it so that yours is something close to what you hope to do. They're really only interested in people doing "high risk" jobs.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Took your advice and called, an extra £39 including £17.50 admin fee until policy end in April.
Said through that it would have to be bussiness class 2 and not social and commuting, tried to find out why it had to be bus2 but never managed t get an answer ?? Elephant insurance do social and commuting but nit applicable to me us for some reason ?

My OH I s an AA patrol, because if his job although we are fully comp neither of us are allowed to drive 3rd party on another car, when we asked why they said because if OH works van is off the road potentially he would use OUR car to do breakdowns !!!!
The cheek if it !! :eek:0 -
It can be a bit weird how it all works. For me it's cheaper to have business use on my policy (which I do less than 50 business miles a year) then to have Social, and commuting.0

Well, the AA say...Car usage
You should select Social, Domestic and Pleasure if you, and all of the named drivers, only intend to use the vehicle for non-work activities eg:- visiting friends and family
- shopping
- day trips, and holidays
If you, or any of the named drivers will be using the vehicle to travel to and from various places of work (for example, visiting other offices) you will need to include business cover, so you should select Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Business Use.
And Direct Line say...Am I covered for commuting?
Direct Line's Social, Domestic and Pleasure policy cover includes commuting. This allows you to drive to and from a permanent place of work.
By 'permanent' place of work, we mean a single office, site, location or place of work that you intend to travel to for the duration of your contract of employment.
If you are employed, for example, on a 3 month contract and will only be travelling to one location/site/office during the term of your contract, then Social Domestic & Pleasure is sufficient.
Well there's two.If you know of others that are different, then the best advice for the OP is to ask her insurers.Look up what "commuting" means
I already know what commuting means.0 -
The aa's advice is also bad if that's what they tell motorists!
It is not usual for sdp to include commuting.0
