In rented flat, demand for £100 from Utility Warehouse

In rented flat, demand for £100 from Utility Warehouse.

Just moved into rented flat, letter has arrived from Utility Warehouse demanding £100 deposit and saying I'm now one of their customers. I have had no contact with this firm before, never signed a contract etc.
Have signed up with nPower for electricity but will take a few weeks to set up apparently.
I have no problem paying for what I use until I switch but a letter out of the blue demanding £100 seems over the top.

Second letter this week demanding £100 again and threatening me with big bill ( £ 600+) when they install a pre-payment meter.

Have already written back saying no thanks I'm off to nPower.

Can anybody tell me where I stand please ?

Many thanks, Bob
