I use a virtual PC (VMWare) for all my banking needs and never visit any website not connected with online banking. All other browsing is done outside of this virtual PC.

I'm not sure how secure this is, but typically, any virus or trojan or malware run on the main PC will not be able to affect the Virtual PC, as it has no access to the host PC and vice versa. Of course, if the virus is able to search for the disk image containing the virtual PC and infect that, then yes, but I think thats unlikely as I'd imagine < 1% of people do this and viruses and the like go for the mainstream.

I think I've identified your problem.

Use firefox or chrome. They update security regularly and usually automatically

Try using a program called spybot, sounds terrible but it basically routes out these browser infections and its been going for years with regular updates

Vmware sounds smart, is the free trial ok to do that much.

The problem with antivirus on the Windows OS is it is not perfect and may give a false sense of security.

    This from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-browser

" Known Trojans may be detected, blocked and removed by antivirus software. In a 2009 study, the effectiveness of antivirus against Zeus was 23%, and again low success rates were reported in a separate test in 2011. The 2011 report concluded that additional measures on top of antivirus were needed "

    This from http://www.quarri.com/files/Quarri_PCI_Brief.pdf

" In their 2011 Banking Security Test, MRG Effitas reported that of 27 Internet Security products tested on Windows 32-bit and Windows 64-bit computers, only a handful were effective in preventing the Zeus botnet. Their report went on to conclude that, based on evidence from their research, users need to employ additional security measures on top of traditional anti-virus or internet security suites to counter threats posed by modern
    malware. "

edit: The report is at http://www.zemana.com/Media/MRG%20Banking%20Report%202011%20Final.pdf

All browsers it seems are susceptible to one or more of the botnets which may have widespread infection rates and low detection.

The Mac OS is a much more secure system unless you use Firefox which has been defeated by the Weyland-Yutani BOT.
Trusteer Rapport is a good system but many people report problems after installing it on their computers and then remove it.
  • Most banks supply their own software nowadays. If you get problems after you follow their instructions I think you can start to say its their fault or their website

You might want to check your hosts file for any malicious entries. Open it in notepad. Check out Wikipedia for info (since I can't post links).
