Hi
Whilst shopping in Tesco today Olive oil leaked from a carton onto my tan leather bag, what are my rights? I did tell the store manager and he said if it doesn't come out go back and see Him. But what are my rights?

I presume that the carton was not inside your bag ? How did it leak was your bag in the trolley.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0

I'm a little confused as to how a can of olive oil was near/in your handbag??
Could you explain how it happened?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
What's the big confusion? Shopper puts her handbag into the shopping trolley as is fairly common, then puts in a carton containing olive oil which subsequently leaks and causes damage, or alternatively she was carrying the carton in her hand or basket that leaked onto her leather bag that was over her shoulder.
It's not rocket science and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter how it happened, unless it was the OP's own fault.0 -

Not really!
Very unwise to put handbag in the trolley! Way too easy to get it stolen, so I very much doubt this is common!!
Also, surely you would stand oil up in the trolley (or is that just me?!?!), so is the OP saying it's leaked from a place it shouldn't have, or did they have the can lying down and it's leaked?
Or did the OP put the oil in their bag after they'd done their shopping, and THEN it leaked?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

Yes I think the circumstances are very relevant.
Things do leak sometimes and I think we have to take some responsibility and use some common sense.
I usually keep my bag in the child seat part with the straps through it so someone would have to undo the straps before they could steal it.
This also keeps it away from anything that could possibly damage it.0 -

Hi
Olive oil leaked from a carton onto my tan leather bag,
what are my rights? ?
How about providing some info on HOW EXACTLY this happened. Might help a lot.
Would certainly avoid the spat above....
I would have thought. You rights were next to none. As you do have a duty of care.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
It's pretty standard in situations like this for the retailer to offer some sort of compensation. It will either be an attempt to have the bag cleaned or compensation for a replacement. The store manager will have authorisation from h/o to resolve situations like this and they are pretty common although it's usually leaking bleach. If Tesco is the same as some of the other 'big 4' the store manager will be able to authorise upto £1000 for repairing/replacing customers possessions after something has leaked. Highest one I ever did was for a customer who had been shopping and placed a bag with bleach in on their backseat and it had leaked through and the full back seat needed recovering. (Although I think we just replaced the seat in the end, due to the bleach soaking most of the way through)
It's expected that most products sold won't leak regardless of how they are placed in the trolley or what's been placed in with them, so it's just classed as faulty and the responsibility of the store provided the customer wasn't seen damaging the product.0 -
