Lucky there are nice people like you there with practical advice!!
And as I'd on cue, my husband just got a call from pizza hut asking him to meet them Tuesday about an evening delivery job he applied for. I know it's not his ideal situation but as I said he is willing to do anything just to help out until he finds something more permanent.

It's just such a shame some people like to think they know your background. FYI, I was physically and mentally abused for seven years, pressured into taking on bills for my ex, I foolishly bought a house with him, me raising my half of the deposit on a credit card but because I was a student we did it in his sole name, he then had an affair and took everything and because the house wasn't in my name I couldn't touch it, and because the debts were in my name I got screwed.

tHATS the quality of some men out there for you. Not all, as my husband is nothing like that at all. But I wasn't some mental case shopaholic that couldn't control myself and ought bankruptcy was an easy option. I tried to do an iva and natwest kicked it out, my financial adviser said to them I will have no choice but to go br.

So yes it will live with me for the rest of my life!!

An IVA will not be an option if you do not have quite a large income excess for repayments, as you say you are living very basic and need £70 a week to make ends meet, that is the reason an IVA was turned down.

I wonder if the reason you seem so upset is not because you need this £70 to make ends meet, as it does seem strange that the figure you need is the same amount your partner would get on income based JSA, but more so that you see others getting benefits so feel you should too.

You say you want suggestions to help your situation, my advice is to try and move to a cheaper part of the country, which will make living on £442 a week a doddle.

BTW what is your rent amount? I do agree rents are far to high and this is the reason wages seem low, someone on your wage should not be struggling.
  • considering going down to one car?........................for real????

you'll get accused of being judgmental ;)

But I agree it does seem that the Op's idea of basic living is different to mine.

It's not as straight forward as "giving up a car" to save money short term. What if they sold his car and only got £500, it was part way through a year so they paid a cancellation fee on the insurance etc, then two days later he go another job on £30k a year but doesn't get paid for a month and then they have to go the credit card route to buy another car? Sometimes you have to take the long term view.

I would suggest trying to help OP instead of being horrible. And yes people do have different standards of what they think income is high. I don't think £29k a year for two people is high. That's what I'm on and it only comes to £1750 a month. Depending on what area you live in it's not very high.
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.
  • rent is £950.
The IVA got turned down and I went bankrupt quite a few years ago and bears no relation on the situation we are in now.
The phrase I used was 'considering' going down to one car to save on a second insurance bill and because my husbands car is literally worth about £250 and it's going to need work doing to it very soon to get it through an MOT which is worth more than the car is.
Some people can be super snidey on here which is really massively unhelpful!
And no, £1750 a month to live on is not a lot when rent is as high as it is. If I was lucky enough to have a £400 mortgage like my friends have when we all bought houses around the same time, then I would not be struggling at all.
And what a daft thing to say, move to another part of the country. Yes, because it's easy to up and leave when you have a very infirm parent who needs you to go around and care for them daily. Please don't make such comments as clearly if we could move to a cheaper part of the country we would have done that long ago!!

If I lived where my friends are in Manchester and paid their rents, it would be happy days, my husband wouldn't have to work. Living in the South East, making ends meet is tough!

No, it is totally coincidental that it is £70 a week that we need to cover our bills and break even. It is more luck than judgement that JSA covers it for the time being.

My IVA application was 5 years ago and subsequently went bankrupt and am 3,5 years post bankruptcy so the comment re the IVA bears no relation to our situation at present and was based on entirely different information so that is a non point.

I agree but if the OP is having sleepless nights and getting stressed because she needs £70 a week extra, then surely the answer is cutting back until her partner gets a job.

As for the insurance, I would expect them to get a refund if they have paid for the year, not have to pay them for cancelling.

The Op says she wants advice but doesn't seem to want advice that says to cut back on expenses until her partner gets a job, or to move to a new area, for some reason she thinks all her problems will be resolved for an extra £70 a week, I would think cutting back £70 in expenses would be good advice.

Many people on here can only dream of a wage of £442 a week plus extra she is getting from private lessons.

Agreeing with the Op that it's wrong her partner is not entitled to income based JSA is not helping, sometimes you need to say how it is, sorry but ATM the OP is on £442 plus £71 JSA and is having sleepless nights? sorry if my advice seems rude but if 2 people can't manage on that amount then there is a bigger problem than him not finding a job, and it needs to be said.
