Can you claim bank charges back from a building society?
Even if the building society doesn't exist anymore?
eg, Alliance & Leicester is now Santander

No. You cant claim bank charges back like you used to. Since the banks won the court case, the areas are far more limited.
You can make a complaint to Santander and if they agree with you then they will make an offer. If they dont agree with you then they wont.
What would be your basis of complaint? We can assume you are not using hardship criteria as you are not a current customer. So what is the basis of your complaint?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. I thought you were still able to claim back bank charges.
I had an old account with Alliance and Leicester where i went £1 over my overdraft limit then they charged me £5 a day and it went from like £350 overdrawn to like £800 or something stupid like that.
Yeah the account has been closed now I think.
I do have a closed HSBC account that I used to have where I had about £4000 in charges for like failed direct debits and stuff but that account is closed now I think.
As for being in Financial Hardship, I'm living with my girlfriends parents at the moment and only just got a job a couple of days ago.
My bank account at the moment is a "Cashminder" account because my credit rating is so poor.0 -

No. That boat has sailed long ago. Now the only times you can get success on bank charges are 1) goodwill offer from bank for first time offence, 2) goodwill offer from bank if you meet their financial hardship criteria or 3) the charges were incorrectly applied.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
