hi
my mate has a iphone 4s that he dropped in the sink. im pritty confident i can fix it, as ive fixed a good few water damaged iphone 4s before. his insurance payed out for a replacement. but will the service provider block his damaged one? if i thought they wouldnt block it, i would buy it off him and fix it for myself to use

Apple, from memory, have a very subjective attitude to "water damage", and build sensors into their phones that (supposedly) detect water ingress. These sensors are however incapable of determining what form the water took. It could be that your phone has spent its entire life in a desert, and has lived mostly in your pocket. Water vapour from sweat shows up as "water". There have been a LOT of complaints where Apple have refused to honour their warranty (which doesn't cover "water damage") because the tell-tale sensor in the phone (or other gadget) says that it HAS been water damaged.
"Water damaged but 100% repaired by a competent third party" will almost certaintly qualify - in Apple's view - as a "warranty breaker".0 -
Did the insurance company not request the damaged phone? If they state he still retains ownership he should be fine to sell/give it to you, as far as I know no service provider would routinely blacklist a phone because it was damaged0

When I lost my mobile phone, the service provider asked me to provide them with the IMEI number so they could block the phone. If they have not asked for his, I would suggest you can be confident they cannot block his old phone."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
