WINDOWS ME AND STARTUP

Options
Not found anything onboard that relates to my problem but I have a problem with my PC.

Just had to use original discs to reset pc after trojan knackered it up, but now whenever I 'restart' or 'shutdown' and then switch back on all it brings up is a blank screen with cursor flashing in top left hand corner. I then switch off with button of front of Base Unit and sometimes it starts ok or others I have to take out bb usb to get it going again. Any suggestions why? It has just been to menders and they say nothing is wrong and it starts OK.

To stop me reinstalling everything again if I have to use restore cd's how can I make a disc/cd of everything that is on PC?

thanks

  • It sounds like the Windows O/S on your PC may have become corrupted, wither by the virus/trojan that you had or when you used the original disks to 'reset' your PC. Either way, it is not an uncommon occurence. :(

Unfortunately, it is not normally possible to just copy installed programs, etc to a CD, as the install process makes changes to the Windows Registry and other relevant files which are required for the programs to run. This would not happen if you just copied the program files from CD back onto a restored PC.

There are programs around that will copy and restore an entire hard drive, but from what you describe they will copy the Windows errors along with any programs and data.

Although it might be a bitter pill to swallow, the best solution in the long term is to back up all your data files and reinstall Windows and effectively start again with a clean system - something which is advisable (but still a pain!) every couple of years with most Windows systems. It may also be worth looking at upgrading from ME to XP at the same time, as ME is known to have many problems; XP is far more stable.

At the very least, back up all your data files (My Documents and any other relevant folders) to a CD incase the bootup problems get any worse. I would suggest doing that NOW and consider updating the backup as required until the PC is stable again. (Of course, we all back up regularly don't we! ::) )

Sorry, that is probably not the answer you wanted to hear. I know from personal experience what a pain it is to do, but I also know that the results, in the form of a clean and fast PC, are well worth the effort ! :)
  • Will back up today and i downloaded a driver for the bb modem and it seems to restart etc ok - that must have been the problem. so far so good at the moment.
