Changing basin waste - how to remove old one?

Is there a particular method or trick to remove the type of basin wastes which don't have back-nuts securing them in place?
I've got a basin waste with one of the pop-up plugs controlled by a lever on the tap, the mechanism was broken when I moved in and I want to replace the waste with another but can't see how to remove the old one. There's no back-nut and no obvious way of releasing it.
Any ideas?

Disconnect the rod mechanism. Remove the plug. Disconnect the trap. Unscrew the part that hangs beneath the basin from the part that sits in the basin. You may find there are a pair of lugs inside to help you do it.
Alternatively, if you remove the plug and look into the waste you may see a circular piece of brass with a hole in the cntre that the rod on the base of the plug fits down into. You will see two cuts in the circle and if you imagine that the circle is plain metal these would be either end of a slot cut into it. A suitably sized screwdriver will enable you to undo this "screw" and the waste will come apart.
So one of two methods. Without a pic can't determine which mechanism you have.

or just buy a new pop up waste just use the rod & replace the rod that goes into the waste & connects to the rod that goes through the taps, then you don't need to remove anything.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
