...regarding broadband internet access i mean with router/modem on adsl. do the filters have to be installed on ONLY phone sockets which have a phone/handset plugged in, or on ALL phone sockets regardless of whether a phone/handset is plugged in? thanks as always

Only on Sockets with equipment attached. Why not just pick up a BT Master NTE with Integrated ADSL Filter that gives you two ports and filters the entire house from the one socket removing the need for all the filters elsewhere.Cheers

Each individual telephone equipment needs its own filter, regardless of number of sockets. In other words, don't "Tee" more than one appliance into a single filter or it may not work.
