Argh - Removal Men Cancelled on Me!

I am in Total Panic Meltdown

We are supposed to be moving on Thursday and I got an email last night from the removal guy saying that he had been double booked and now can't do our move! (worse yet he know this for a week but didn't bother to get in touch as he "thought someone might cancel" )

So what do I do ....

do you have any confirmation of them doing your removals on the date in writing?

i wonder if it's worth getting them to sort out someone else for you, as ultimately they have pulled out of their contract? i don't know the legalities - is it worth ringing trading standards?

at least your move is on a thurs - slightly better than a friday. i would also just start ringing round - good luck x

I hadn't signed a contract unfortunately. Having spoken to another company this is not the first time he has pulled this type of thing - b*****

the one good thing maybe (hopefully you will find someone else, even if it's hiring a big van and borrowing lots of friends:p ), is that now this rubbish man isn't doing your removals.

we had someone like this who got the van size wrong (even though i asked r u sure?), so they put some stuff in their storage (we were moving 300+ miles away). then they didn't arrive till 10 at night (expecting them around 3pm - thought they'd nicked the lot). then it took 2 months to get the rest of the stuff back (and that was only because i held half the money back, thank god:eek: ). we also ended up with a few bits missing and gained a few bits of someone else's

i know it seems awful now, but hopefully in the end you might be glad to have seen the back of him. let us know how you get on x
  • It's awful isn't it :(

That happened to me - but I gave them such an earful that they ended up moving me.

Have you asked them if they can recommend any other companies? Most local removal companies all know each other, they may be able to give you some numbers to call.

    Good luck :)

As an owner of a removal company , we do hear of this happening , tbh he probably got a better priced job in ...........All i can suggest to anyone is they go on recommendations or find a member of the BAR , its companies like this that give the industry a bad name .

Had you already paid for your removal? I would have thought if they had already taken your money then that was as good as a contract (but could be wrong about this as I'm no expert). When we moved a few days ago we had to pay up front for our removal before they would consider it a definite booking.
I'm sure you'll find someone to do it... try searching through yell.com or british association of removers... bar.co.uk
    Good luck

  • That's awful, did you put a deposit down?

I had an even worse experience. My removal van didn't turn up on the day!! Everything was packed ready to go, Buyers on their way, you get the picture. I rang up every number on the yellow pages until I found someone that would do the job on the day for cash in hand. Talk about a stressful move! He did a great job thank goodness.
  • Similar thing happened to me. Was waiting in our empty house for Pickfords to deliver all our things. When they hadn't arrived at 10.30 I called them and discovered that they'd not booked it in! This was on a Thursday, and when I asked when they could deliver, was told that they were busy until the following Tuesday. had to stay in the rented place for a few days with Pickfords picking up the bill, plus the costs of all the other things that we'd committed to getting.

Having moved around the world with a variety of companies, I have to say that even ignoring this episode, Pickfords were the most unhelpful!
